Do you ever feel overwhelmed by cluttered or busy spaces?

I do. I find it difficult to focus in a chaotic environment, and a calm, considered space always improves my focus and creativity.
Including my home, one place where I instantly feel relaxed and inspired is Kettle’s Yard in Cambridge. Once the home of Jim Ede and Helen Ede, it was preserved as a space to showcase art. The moment you step inside, it’s clear that every object has been thoughtfully placed to create a sense of balance – right down to the smallest details. No single piece demands attention; instead, they exist in harmony. Even the inside of a cupboard is painted to complement the colours in a nearby painting, creating a seamless visual flow from one room to the next.

I am not an interior designer by trade, but as a product designer, I think a lot about the environments where objects exist. Every product I create will eventually sit within a space – so should it be the focal point or blend seamlessly into its surroundings? I lean toward balance, but I also believe each object should be able to stand on its own. A room filled with products that all compete for attention can feel overwhelming in my opinion, while one where beautifully designed objects exist in harmony creates a sense of calm.
What’s your take – do you prefer statement pieces, or a more balanced aesthetic?
